Waste incineration plants and Alpiq extend partnership

In Switzerland, waste incineration plants (WIPs) are important producers of heat and electricity. Alpiq has extended its contracts for the marketing of power production with three major WIPs.

In Switzerland, all waste incineration plants (WIPs) use the heat resulting from waste incineration to generate electricity. For 13 years now, Alpiq has marketed the electricity produced in a number of Swiss WIPs. KEZO in Hinwil, GEVAG in Trimmis and Limeco in Dietikon have now extended their contracts with Alpiq by a period of several years. The contracts include competitive market access to electricity trading and participation in the ancillary services market for control energy of Swissgrid, the national grid company. For Alpiq, the WIPs are important supporting elements and partners in the Swiss power supply system, which is why the company has worked with the WIPs to attune the contract models more closely to changing market requirements.

1.2 billion kWh of electricity from WIP production

Alpiq currently markets around 1.2 billion kWh of electricity from Swiss waste incineration plants. Alpiq not only offers standard projects but also adapts contracts to the WIP’s individual situation upon request by the customer. What is more, the contracts are formulated with long-term partnerships in mind and are the subject of ongoing development in line with changes on the energy market. For example, Alpiq has implemented a customer portal for WIPs to enable simple reporting and visualisation of electricity forecasts. “That is a direct result of the partnership and shows how reliably we collaborate,” says Christian Hüsler, senior key account manager at Alpiq. From the point of view of the WIPs, there are three particularly important aspects: Flexibility, access to electricity and ancillary services markets, and consulting. KEZO, a waste incineration company based in the Zürcher Oberland, is full of appreciation for Alpiq’s services. “Alpiq was the first electricity supplier to recognise the potential of WIPs as electricity producers. Together with the WIPs, the company developed a contract model that remains the benchmark even after a period of ten years,” says Daniel Böni, KEZO’s managing director.
